Q 2) Cite and analyze briefly an example of Romanticism in “The Country Church,” or “Traits of Indian Character,” or "Philip" (he is also known as the King Philip of King Philip's War" if you've taken American Literature ENG 2311 and read Rowlandson's account of her captivity). Or, if you discuss the Indian/Philip sketches, beyond the romanticism, are the sketches racist? If so, in what sense (does Irving intend them to be? Since this is almost at the time of the removal of the 5 Civilized tribes (the Cherokee), does Irving's sketch take up the issue in any way? If so, does his portrayal suggest his support the Jacksonian removal of the Cherokee or perhaps oppose the forcible removal of the Cherokee? I'll note that the sketch says nothing directly, so at best you must infer his position from the evidence of the two sketches and make a case. However, the optional reading from the History of New York more directly addresses the issue of land ownership and removal and is also a very good example of satire and irony (note: it is Knickerbocker narrator's argument that is satirized, not Native Americans).

Saying romanticism an era where the beauty of literature begun might not be wrong because letting the same word and sentences that we use every day to be crafted and written so wonderfully that touches every bit of us can only be done in literature. Washington Irving in his “The Country Church” has wonderfully and aesthetically composed the lines. We can find his beauty of words from the very first paragraph where he describes the location of the church and its infrastructure. It might have been a very blunt description but the involvement of romanticism in it has taken that simple description to a totally different level.
